VMworld is often used to share what we’ve been up to since this time last year and to set the technology bar for things to come. I can’t help but feel there’s something different about this one. The mood this year is reminiscent of the early VMworld’s I attended as a customer. I was eager to get into the middle of all the action and VMworld set the tone for what that would be. They were simpler times then, but the energy was contagious and the technology fundamentally changed the landscape. If you’re attending VMworld in Vegas or Barcelona this year, be ready to experience a renewed energy, strategy and in-your-face innovations (for a lack of better words).
Each year I’m excited to play my little part in all the action. I also tend to turn into a hermit crab as I prep for it all (here we are just 4 days before I head to Vegas…and only now am I getting this post published!). This year will likely be one of the busiest, but that’s exactly what drives me! (also, my FOMO).
Besides the 6 breakouts, I’ve been busy working on the Day 2 Keynote (MainStage) storyline and demo and the Cloud Management BU’s Showcase demo. If you’ve ever wondered whether or not VMware’s leaders had their collective heads in the right place — wonder no more. These sessions will demonstrate why VMware’s Cloud Management business continues to lead the industry. You’ll also see a wholesale push to developer-focused cloud infrastructure and services with several announcements in that arena. So…yeah, going to be a spectacular showing.
I’ve also managed to get a handful of breakouts this year — 6 in Vegas, 4 in Barcelona. It’s a mix of topics with one constant: vRealize Automation. Here’s a rundown of the breakouts…
VMworld US Sessions:
Effectively Operating an Automated Cloud [MGT1758BU]
Monday, Aug 28, 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Islander E, Lower Level
Co-Presenter: Hicham Mourad
Abstract: IT must deliver services to diverse consumers. Data centers are undergoing a massive transformation from high-end proprietary metal to software-defined commodity, and apps are spread across a hybrid fabric. As exciting as this is, it’s only as good as the tools and services available for driving the need for enterprise transformation: the apps. The VMware Cloud Management Platform is serves as the management control plane for the software-defined data center. While VMware vRealize Automation provisions and manages apps across the hybrid cloud, VMware vRealize Operations provides a holistic view of all infra and apps. Together, vRealize Automation and VMware vRealize Operations deliver a comprehensive cloud management platform. Join this technical session to gain a deeper understanding of the VMware Cloud Management Platform in action.
vRealize Automation Experts Panel: How to Win over App Developers and End Shadow IT [MGT2751PU]
Monday, Aug 28, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Mandalay Bay Ballroom D, Level 2
Abstract: As any IT professional knows, being able to provision systems in a consistent manner reliably is highly desirable. However, doing it proactively is an entirely new level of service delivery. Customers have been leveraging VMware vRealize Automation to do just that: delivering dev-centric services before the developers even know they’re needed. Join this technical panel of distinguished VMware customers that have implemented VMware vRealize Automation to help transform and modernize enterprise IT and deliver services that eliminate the threat of shadow IT. Learn how they deliver legacy and modern applications alike across distributed infrastructures and leverage some of the latest vRealize Automation capabilities to radically change how IT delivers these services.

Manage, Govern, and Extend VMware Cloud on AWS with vRealize Automation [MGT2875BU]
Tuesday, Aug 29, 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Surf C, Level 2
Co-Presenter: the one and only Brian Graf
Abstract: With all the excitement around VMware Cloud on AWS—the convergence of VMware’s software-defined data center (SDDC) with Amazon’s public cloud services—you’re probably wondering how the modern enterprise can take advantage of this offering without abandoning existing business policies and IT processes. Wonder no more. VMware vRealize Automation can rapidly extend your existing private, public, or hybrid cloud services into VMware Cloud on AWS, just like any VMware SDDC stack. Join this breakout to discover how VMware vRealize Automation adds service authoring and delivery, governance, lifecycle management, and enterprise extensibility to your VMware Cloud on AWS service.
vRealize Automation Solves the Container On-boarding Conundrum [MGT1776BU]
Wednesday, Aug 30, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Islander C, Lower Level
Abstract: Customers looking for a strategy for on-boarding Gen-3 apps (containers) without abandoning critical business processes finally have a solution to do so. vRealize Automation’s native Container Management engine provides a bridge for building, delivering, and lifecycle-managing container hosts and applications side-by-side with traditional IaaS apps, including the ability to deliver hybrid “gen-2.5” apps using vRA’s unified service designer. This allows customers to gain insight into container provisioning by leveraging all the common enterprise services vRA has to offer, including governance, extensibility, ecosystem integration, and lifecycle management. Join this session to dig into this exciting new feature and gain insight into the technical details of vRA’s integrated container management.
Full-Stack Automation: Streamlining, Delivering, and Managing App-Centric IT [MGT1799BU]
Wednesday, Aug 30, 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Islander C, Lower Level
Abstract: One day, history will tell the story of the VMware software-defined data center (SDDC) strategy and how it fundamentally transformed IT in ways only VMware is capable of doing. Executing on the SDDC is not limited to simply delivering best-in-class compute, network, and storage virtualization technologies, but also about execution of the vision. That vision—where dynamic infrastructure is wrapped around the unique requirements of every application—comes to life through the primary interface of the SDDC: the cloud management stack.
What’s New with vRealize Automation 7.3 [MGT1847BU]
Thursday, Aug 31, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Mandalay Bay Ballroom K, Level 2
Co-Presenter: Naomi Sullivan
Abstract: Each incremental release of VMware vRealize Automation has delivered innovative new features and functions that focus on providing the greatest customer value. vRealize Automation 7.3, the most recent release, is no exception to this rule. Join this session to learn what’s new in vRealize Automation 7.3.
Besides that, I’ll be hanging around Hands-On-Labs, hanging with the crew and reminiscing about the good ol’ days of hamsters, duct tape and hundreds of laptops that made the early HOL’s possible. Also TAM Day sessions, Executive Briefs, and casual meet-ups.
Oh…also a party or two.
I’m looking forward to hanging with old friends, partners, customers, community members and any combination of these. Most importantly, I’m looking forward to what comes next — VMworld will set the tone, then it’s all about execution. Execute we will.
